Our communities

Unlike other big infrastructure projects, the process of choosing a site for a GDF requires the express consent of the people who would be living alongside it. Without their support, the project will not go ahead. Note – LLWR commnuity here or elsewhere…

How we work together

We’re working in partnership with local communities to build a better future and we will be led by local people.

Our partnership approach means:

  • there will be a fair and transparent process that meets the needs of communities
  • a GDF can only be developed if the geology is suitable and a community is willing to host it
  • • we will ensure that people have the opportunity to have their questions answered
  • we will explore how a GDF can support the community’s vision for their area
  • communities can withdraw from the process, and if they do, then a GDF cannot be built.

Community Investment Funding

Community Investment Funding of up to £1 million has been made available for any community that participates in the siting process for a GDF.
The grants can be used to fund projects, schemes or initiatives benefiting the Search Area that:
• provide economic opportunities
• enhance the natural and built environment, or
• improve community wellbeing.

Has any community ever consented to host a GDF?

Yes. Finland has chosen a site where it plans to build a GDF, with the support of the local community there.

Posiva Oy, the Finnish version of NWS, chose Olkiluoto island as the site for their GDF in 2000. The majority of the local community was in favour of the project then, and support has actually grown as the project has developed.

SKB, the Swedish version of NWS, developed a consent-based approach before the UK. They committed to walk away from any community that did not support having a GDF built nearby. That helped communities to trust them and get involved in the conversation with confidence.

Progress in the UK

Working in partnership with local communities, our Geological Disposal Facility programme is further ahead than it has ever been before.
