Radioactive waste represents a significant societal challenge for the UK. As a country we’ve benefitted from the use of radioactive materials for several generations. At NWS, we are moving along with safe and secure solutions.
Low Level Waste Repository
The Repository site receives low level solid waste from a range of customers, such as the nuclear industry, the Ministry of Defence, non-nuclear industries, educational, medical and research establishments.
Waste is only disposed directly at the repository site if it cannot be diverted for alternative treatment and disposal.

Geological disposal
There is international agreement that geological disposal, deep underground, is the safest permanent solution to deal with radioactive waste.
Working in partnership with communities here in the UK, our Geological Disposal Facility programme is further ahead than it has ever been before.
